The 2022 Ford Escape SEL stands out as a smart money decision by offering a rich set of standard features and comfort upgrades that are often optional on similarly priced compact SUVs.
Analytical buyers who compare spec sheets and scrutinize value will find the Escape SEL's equipment-per-dollar ratio impressive. Its inclusion of the Equipment Group 301A package, automatic climate control, and comprehensive connectivity ensures daily convenience and comfort. The rear seat flexibility and straightforward LATCH system simplify life for families and commuters alike, making this SUV especially compelling for those balancing cost against usabilityâ"especially in areas with temperature swings like rd St. Homewood, IL, where heated features quickly justify themselves.
Performance in the Escape SEL is a value highlight thanks to its 1.5L EcoBoost engine and 8-speed automatic transmission, delivering responsive acceleration and smooth gear transitions. The turbocharged setup provides confident passing and merging power that is rare at this price tier, while front-wheel drive keeps running costs low. With EPA-estimated fuel economy of 28 city and 34 highway, owners benefit from lower annual fuel expenses and fewer fill-ups, contributing to an overall lower cost of ownership compared to many non-turbocharged rivals in the segment.
Safety value is a clear strength, as the Escape SEL delivers an array of standard safety equipment that others offer only as part of costly upgrades. Features like traction control, electronic stability control, and a rear backup camera are included without requiring any extra packages. The presence of multiple airbags and an easy-to-use LATCH system for child seats further enhance everyday protection. Four-wheel disc brakes provide consistent stopping power, underscoring Fordâs commitment to offering core safety features as standard rather than optional.
Included features like the Equipment Group 301A, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, SYNC 3 touchscreen infotainment, SiriusXM satellite radio, and automatic climate control all come standard on this trim. These additions elevate daily comfort and usability, allowing drivers to enjoy seamless entertainment, navigation, and year-round comfort without extra cost. The Ebony interior and Black Metallic exterior complete a look that feels upscale without requiring a move to a premium trim or a higher price bracket.
When comparing value, the Escape SEL holds a clear advantage over key competitors like the Honda CR-V EX and Toyota RAV4 XLE. While these models often charge extra for heated seats, advanced connectivity, or turbocharged engines, the Escape SEL delivers these features as standard. Its blend of responsive driving dynamics, standard tech, and comfort-focused amenities means buyers get more for their investment. The result is a compact SUV that maximizes value without sacrificing driving enjoyment or interior quality.
Whatâs included as standard equipment? Heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, SYNC 3 with touchscreen, SiriusXM satellite radio, automatic climate control, and the Equipment Group 301A are all standard. Is this vehicle worth the price? Yes, because features that cost extra on competitors come included here, boosting long-term savings. Which trim offers the best value? The SEL trim delivers the optimal balance of features and comfort for the price.

Great performance highway/city/winters
by Ed S on 8/25/2026 4:16:53 PM
Got the '21 SEL Hybrid used, and it's felt like a steal. I was moving from the south to the northern midwest, and needed a car that could hold family of 4+gear, had good mileage, good handling and driving all seasons, and really preferred some creature comforts. 3 months after purchase, I had to take it on the big test of 3k+ mile trip into the Dakotas, ending in a winter storm the last 250 miles. It handled everything wonderfully, and in comfort. MPG dropped to the low-mid 30's when I was doing pure highway, jumped up to low 40's with combo city/highway. No idea what people are complaining about on engine straining/noise, this thing has handled everything from driving 80 along the highways to climbing a steep grade hill during a blizzard. No issues at all, the AWD is a great need for my winters, and it's more modern features work well. My assumption is those complaining of engine noise/issues have had poor maintenance. I've kept up with mine very diligently, and have nice tires in place to help with winters here. The interesting positive is my year/model came with a map nav and sync as standard. So it has mapping/updating/etc all built in. But I never use it as I still prefer my phone Android Auto setup. Biggest complaint is it feels like there's just not quite enough space in the back, even when dropping the seats. You can fit luggage/hardware/gear in there, but you'll need to be creative. I ended up getting the roof rack as a fall-back for bigger things. - 5.0

Great SUV
by TucsonC on 4/28/2026 7:31:49 PM
Bought my car brand new February 2023. It’s a 2022 model sports package. Love the way it handles. rarely uses gas as I do mostly in town errands. Smaller than my previous Non plug-in Ford Escape, but actually like it that way. Backseat does fold down and plenty of rear cargo room.
