The 2027 Ford Explorer Active immediately stands out in the midsize SUV segment against alternatives like the Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot by combining a robust 2.3L EcoBoost I-4 engine, rear-wheel drive dynamics, and a tech-forward feature set. Its primary advantage is delivering impressive fuel efficiencyâ"20 city and 29 highway MPGâ"paired with a modern design and flexible three-row seating, making it a smart choice for buyers seeking both efficiency and family versatility.
Shoppers cross-shopping midsize SUVs who need a capable family vehicle for daily commuting and weekend adventures will find the Explorer Active particularly appealing. It caters to families and active professionals who value space, technology, and comfort. Compared to rivals, the Explorer's standard navigation system and seamless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration make it ideal for those who prioritize connectivity and convenience, especially for drivers in areas like Homewood, IL where unpredictable weather and urban commutes are routine.
While competitors such as the Toyota Highlander offer V6 options, the Explorer's 2.3L EcoBoost I-4 engine paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission delivers a smooth blend of power and efficiency. The rear-wheel drive setup enhances handling and responsiveness, giving the SUV a balanced, composed feel on both city streets and highways. Its independent suspension and speed-sensing steering translate to confident driving, whether maneuvering in tight spaces or cruising on longer road trips.
In safety equipment, the Explorer Active takes the lead by including standard features like ABS brakes, electronic stability control, traction control, emergency communication with 911 Assist, and a rear parking camera. Many competitors require costly upgrades for these active safety technologies. The addition of blind spot monitoring (if present), automatic high-beam headlights, and a comprehensive airbag system ensures that families and drivers benefit from advanced safety without added expense.
This SUV's feature set is engineered for comfort and connectivity. Standard equipment includes a navigation system, SiriusXM with 360L, dual-zone automatic temperature control, and a power driver seat. Third-row bench seating supports larger families or extra cargo needs, while remote keyless entry, heated mirrors, and steering wheel-mounted audio controls simplify daily use. The SUV's Ultra Dark Space Gray interior complements the Agate Black Metallic exterior for a refined, modern look.
Stacked against the Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot, the Explorer Active delivers more standard tech and safety features at its trim level. Where others may charge extra for navigation or advanced infotainment, these are included. Its 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty enhances long-term value, and the SUVâs impressive highway fuel economy makes it especially attractive for those balancing family needs with cost-consciousness. In value and equipment, it is a clear leader among its peers.
Why choose the Explorer Active over other midsize SUVs? It offers more standard connectivity and navigation features at its price point. What does it deliver that others donât? Full integration of Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and SiriusXM with navigation are included, not optional.

Love it.
by Alex on 8/9/2026 11:55:02 PM
Single guy looking for a vehicle that is fun to drive but can haul junk too, and this fits the bill. I came from a 2018 Lincoln MKZ 3.0t AWD, this has all the same features but this does it better. Mine had one minor panel issue the dealership is fixing, but otherwise everything is solid. Installed a BOV, I find it funny to blow past people with a quiet exhaust and a loud Spanish sound as they disappear into the distance. Fantastic nighttime viability over the lower trims. Actually just better over all than the lower trims. Bolt ons and a tune just puts this in its own league for the price you pay, the only thing that comes close is a 2026 dodge Durango RT 392. ST is not for everyone but it is for me. "Sporty" family hauler my butt. Wrong demographic. This is a genuine fast mid-sized SUZ that you'd have to go luxury to get close to the performance numbers otherwise. - 5.0
